Landscaping Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. What does NPK in fertilizer stand for? N (nitrogen), P (phosphorous) and K (potassium) is usually representated in a percentage in regards to fertilizer, ie. NPK 23-3-23 contains 23% nitrogen, 3% phosphorous and 23% potassium. Nitrogen promotes leaf growth, phosphorous promotes root health and potassium promotes strong stems and shoots. Q. How many times should I fertilize my lawn? Generally lawns are fertilized four times a year. Starting with a spring application, approximately one month before the growing season starts. Then fertilize about every two months, two more times during the summer, with a final fertilize in the fall. Q. What is the difference between fish soil and mulch? Fish soil is generally a composition of 50% fish compost and 50% mulch. Using fish compost on your garden beds works like a slow release fertilizer. Mulch has no fertilizer components. The use of mulch is recommended as it suppresses weed growth, conserves water, keeps soil temperatures cooler, and helps prevent soil erosion.
